The idea of pH was first introduced in 1909 by Søren Sørensen, a Danish chemist. The pH scale became Sørensen's best-known contribution to science, and is still incredibly valuable today.

What Is pH?

First, let's define pH for those who may not remember it from grade-school science class.

pH is a standardized measurement of the acidity or basicity of a liquid. The pH scale ranges from zero to fourteen, with seven being neutral.

Any liquid with a pH below seven is acidic. Any liquid with a pH above seven is basic. pH also affects many things besides human drinking water. For example, the pH of soil has a huge effect on which crops will grow well in it (if any).

The Best pH Level of Water for Consumption

So, for humans, what's the best possible drinking water pH level?

For the most part, neutral pH is best when it comes to water. Drinking water with a pH level of about 6.5 to 8.5 is ideal. If the pH level falls a little outside of that range, it might still be safe to drink, but it won't taste as good.

If the pH level is higher than that ideal range, the water may have a baking-soda-like taste. And if the pH level is below the ideal range, it will probably taste bitter or even metallic.

How to Change Water pH

If your water's pH level is outside of the ideal range, is there any way to fix it?

Yes -- you actually have a couple of options. First, you can use a neutralizing filter to restore a balanced pH to drinking water. Neutralizing filters use minerals to bring the pH level of water back to neutral.

Second, you can use a water distiller, which uses heat to remove particles and balance the pH level.
