Fluoride for Children: Is It Safe for Kids to Drink Fluoride Water?
Wednesday, January 8, 2020

Worried about fluoride? Fluoride is an inorganic mineral found commonly in tap water. In fact, municipal authorities add fluoride into water for public health reasons.

Some scientists say fluoride is good for you, while others warn it’s dangerous. But is it safe for kids to drink fluoride water? Read on to find out more about fluoride for children below.

Fluoride Explained

Contrary to popular belief, fluoride is 100% natural and it occurs in many foods. It’s also found naturally in water alongside ammonia and many other substances, but not in the quantity found in most tap water supplies.

Dissolved in water, fluoride is colorless and odorless. Municipal authorities add fluoride in water supplies in a process called water fluoridation. Water fluoridation helps prevent tooth decay and kill harmful bacteria that affect oral hygiene.

Is Fluoride Dangerous?

Most of the time, fluoride is completely harmless and can even be healthy. However, too much fluoride can lead to fluoride poisoning, which is dangerous.

Fluoride may cause the following symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Spasms
  • Dizziness
  • Seizures

All tap water supplies are safe because they contain only traces of fluoride. Simply put, you can’t get fluoride poisoning from tap water.

Drinking water should contain about 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter. However, if you drink contaminated water that has several times more fluoride than tap water, you are at risk. Anything above 0.7 milligrams per liter is above the recommended amount, though fluoride poisoning requires a lot more.

Fluoride for Children

As we’ve seen above, fluoride is harmless unless ingested in huge quantities. In the trace amounts found in tap water, fluoride is actually beneficial for children.

Dental cavities represent the most common disease in children and adults worldwide. Fluoride is the single most efficient prevention against cavities. Since kids tend to neglect dental hygiene from time to time, fluoridated water ensures their teeth are protected throughout the day.

While fluoride in water is no substitute for proper oral hygiene, it has been proven to help prevent dental cavities and strengthen tooth enamel in kids and adults alike.

So, you don’t have to be worried about your child drinking tap water as long as your community water supply is safe. If there was no fluoride in tap water, we would all spend a lot more money on dentists annually. Instead of putting your child through the pain and discomfort of more dentist visits, trust fluoride in tap water!
