Uses of Ozone Gas When Dissolved in a Liquid

The earth's ozone layer acts as a sort of natural sunscreen. Covering the whole planet, it helps protect us from harmful ultraviolet light.

But the uses of ozone have expanded, including pure water and cleaning products.

What Can Dissolve in Water?

The solubility of gases in liquids is why gases like oxygen, ozone, carbon dioxide, and others can easily end up dissolved in your water.

Just by touching the air around us, oceans and water absorb and dissolve the gases in the air. The level of ozone in the atmosphere is minuscule, however, so if we want ozonated water, we have to make it ourselves or buy it from someone who does.

The higher the level of ozone concentration in a space of air, the more of it is likely to end up dissolved in the water that touches that air. The temperature and acidity of the water also affect how easily it will absorb ozone.

To make ozonated water, ozone bubbles are injected into water from the bottom of a water tank. As they rise to the surface, some of the ozone molecules in the bubbles are dissolved into the water.

Detecting Ozone in Water

There are basically three ways that ozone detectors measure the ozone in our water: the ORP method, the Membrane Probe method, and the UV Absorbance method.

The ORP Method

ORP stands for Oxidation/Reduction Potential. ORP meters only work on pure water.

They work by using ozone to create an electrical charge and then measuring the voltage of that charge. Different voltages mean different ozone concentrations, so you can use the voltage to tell you how much ozone is in the water.

The Membrane Probe Method

The membrane probe method places a membrane over an electrode. As ozone seeps through the membrane, it creates a voltage.

Since the strength of the voltage depends on how much ozone is getting through the membrane, you can again use the voltage strength to tell you how much ozone is in your water.

Membrane probes have the advantage of working in water that is not unusually pure.

The UV Absorbance Method

Ozone (O3) chemistry tells us that it blocks ultraviolet light, so UV absorbance meters create ultraviolet light and then check how much of that light is being blocked by ozone. The more light is blocked, the higher the level of ozone.

Uses of Ozone

According to Oxygen Healing Therapies, "ozonated water is one of the most wonderful substances known to mankind." Ozonation helps create clean, pure water.

The ozone in the water attacks bacteria and parasites as well as chemicals. Liquid ozone is used in some household cleaners.

Additionally, highly ozonated water is used in dentistry and other fields. Studies have found that ozonated water helps dentists to clean teeth effectively and can even help ward off the formation of plaque.
