What Are Suspended Solids?

Total Suspended Solids (TSS) are fine particulate matter that is still left 'suspended' in water. These are particles that are still seen floating in the water and can include gravel, silt, clay, or even decayed/decaying organic matter.

The Suspended Solids are usually no bigger than 2 microns; anything less than this is considered Dissolved Solids. It can be used to give the weight of the particulate matter in a volume of the water sample.

TSS is not to be confused with turbidity. Turbidity deals with the optical determination of water quality. Essentially, if the water looks clouded or murky.

Due to these parameters, both TSS and turbidity are the most visible ways to test water quality in a given sample.

Suspended Solids Monitors

Total Suspended Solids can be tested, and therefore monitored. This is important in order to keep water safe and be made aware of any abnormal changes to it.

The monitors use infrared sensors to detect the solids suspended solids. Through 'backscattering', the monitors are able to measure the TSS at higher levels than normally applicable.

The use of infrared sensors gives it longtime usage. They also mitigate the effects of compromising water sample colors that may be caused by the TSS or turbidity in the sample.
