Reduce excess chemical overfeed with the Q46S Residual Sulfite monitor

Maintaining a small amount of residual sulfite to control the removal of chlorine before discharge to the environment from clean water and also waste water effluent is common practice in many facilities.

Strongly reducing sulfur compounds such as SO2 gas, sodium sulfite or sodium bisulfite solutions are used to eliminate chlorine residuals that might prove toxic to fish and other wildlife in the receiving streams or rivers.

However, because residual chlorine discharge limits are often very close to zero, water quality monitoring residual values to comply with regulations has become very difficult and controlling residuals at values between zero and 10 or 20 parts-per-billion is often not achievable.

To meet stringent discharge limits, the sulfite or bisulfite used for de-chlorination is added in slight excess, providing a small sulfite residual to ensure complete de-chlorination.

This excess must be carefully controlled and monitored and ATi’s Q46S/66 provides operators with a reliable tool for maintaining a small sulfite residual while reducing excess chemical consumption due to overfeed.

Theory of operation

Because measuring the SO3= ion in solution is relatively difficult, the Q46S/66 Residual Sulfite monitor takes a different approach to the measurement, employing a unique gas-phase method to continuously monitor sulfite without contact between the sensor and the water sample, eliminating the potential for sensor fouling, plus the risk of formation of H2S on the GAC filters is reduced.

Gas phase approach to sulfite measurement

In operation, a small amount of sample is pumped into the system and mixed with acid. In acidic solution, the sulfite ion is converted to sulfur dioxide gas as follows:

SO3= + 2H+ → SO2 + H2O

The mixed sample flows into a special chamber where the sulfur dioxide is stripped from the sample. A gas conditioning module prepares the gas sample for measurement prior to contact with a special SO2 gas sensor designed for the system. Sensor signals are amplified and displayed on a large-format, backlit LCD display in the Q46S Residual Sulfite monitor electronics unit.

Maintenance

Sulfite monitoring systems are extremely easy to operate and maintain, with acid usage of one gallon/4.5 litres every 25 days at standard flow rates. Sample and acid are pumped using long life peristaltic pump tubing that requires replacement approximately every 6 months.

Pump heads are designed for easy tube changes, requiring about 10 minutes to replace both pump tubes. The sulfite sensor requires no maintenance other than an occasional visual inspection to ensure that no deposits have collected due to airborne particulates.

The gas stripping technique for monitoring sulfite in solution provides an extremely sensitive on-line monitor. Measurements down to low parts-per-billion can be done easily, and zero and span stability inherent in the sensor allow for monthly calibration cycles.

Chemical savings

Maintaining a small sulfite residual in dechlorinated water has the benefit of insuring complete de-chlorination. Monitoring the concentration of this residual allows chemical feed control that can result in significant chemical cost savings. The best way to look at potential chemical savings is to calculate the cost of each PPM of residual sulfite in a specific volume of de-chlorinated water.

Water quality monitoring has just got even smarter with ATi’s latest innovation, the exclusive smart multi-parameter, street-level telemetry bollard.

The tried and trusted MetriNet technology has been re- developed into a new street-level smart water quality monitoring solution, offering a new way of delivering ultra-low powered, multi-parameter, real-time monitoring for the creation of intelligent, optimised, smarter networks.

Installed at pre-existing hydrants or measuring points, this innovative approach to smart sensor technology features the class-leading M-Node digital water quality sensors and Q52 controller, housed inside a secure, serviceable, flame retardant and vandal resistant telemetry bollard, enabling distributed water quality monitoring without the concerns associated with below ground-level installations. 

This unique system allows water utilities to deliver smart, water quality monitoring of distribution networks the easy way:

  • Less hostile environmental conditions, meaning no water ingress, prolonging the life of the monitoring asset
  • Powered by a 12VDC battery or mains
  • Better communication and connectivity to chosen platform, due to street-level application
  • Increased reliability for data communications and availability to support operational decisions

  • User-friendly Q52 MetriNet interface for simple sensor validation
  • Minimizes water usage with optional solenoid valve

Analysing water quality data from ATi’s range of 16 smart M-Node sensors enables networks to be managed efficiently and resiliently, proactively safeguarding water quality.  The bespoke, KIWA UK Regulation 4 approved system utilises all the experience and expertise that ATi has earned over three decades of working closely with water utilities around the world. Analysing water quality data from the range of MetriNet smart M-Node sensors enables water utilities to extract deeper, real-time insights to enhance operational efficiencies.  

The digital M-Node sensors within the communications bollard have the same accuracy and reproducibility as ATi’s trusted and proven Q-Series sensors and are complete water quality monitors equivalent to traditional online instruments.  Connected to the water supply using a purpose designed ‘click-connect’ flow cell arrangement, they are connected in series to minimise water usage, running at pressures up to 6 bar. Their ultra low powered nature means they have the ability to run autonomously for up to two years on small batteries, or they can be powered from a local plc or telemetry system.

United Utilities award ATi  single-source framework contracts

United Utilities award ATi  single-source framework contracts 

AG Barr, a leading soft drinks company has commissioned the design and installation of a bespoke ATi gas monitoring solution for Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen.

ATi’s Innovation Hub worked closely with the global business to provide a tailored, smart gas detection system, utilising our GasSens control panel with multiple gas heads, to provide industry-leading measurement and logging for hazardous-area sensing.

ATi GasSens controller and D12IR-Ex

The ATi controller is configured to monitor CO2 and Oxygen levels using our D12IR-Ex and F12 gas detectors, protecting operators from harmful levels during the bottling process for cans and bottles. The specialised configuration enables alerts to be sent to the operator when pre-determined levels are exceeded, while safely shutting down the system and locking the doors of the room to prevent unauthorised access, preventing harmful exposure.

Each gas sensor continuously monitors the atmosphere at the soft drinks production sites, reporting any hazardous conditions to the control unit for display by the alpha numeric screen, indicating the reporting sensor, gas type, concentration and alarm status. Alarm levels that are exceeded automatically activate signal outputs, including analogue and digital data and user selectable relays.

This ATi GasSens controller system operates on a 6-core cable network and has the capacity to monitor up to 14 addressable sensors. The bespoke monitoring solution features heated sensor holders to help with the damp location, along with splash and water guards for cleaning. The flexible system also allows the client to have full control of the network, tailored for the needs of their application, with automatic safety check diagnostics and system surveillance for complete peace of mind.

The ATi GasSens controller is capable of measuring over 60 different gases or vapours and was supplied ready to use with pre-calibrated gas sensors.
